BIG SHAKE-UP ON SMASH SEASON 2

As a fellow actor, movie lover and obsessor of all things Broadway, no one was more excited than moi for the new NBC series Smash. Although it was originally developed for Showtime before the former president moved over to NBC and took the show with them, I would have been curious as to see how raw they would have allowed the show to be on a channel that allows you to push the envelope.

That being said once the show aired on NBC it went through a series of troubles, mainly trying to find it's own voice among the sea of wannabe stage performers. Now that the network hag greenlit a second season, many changes are in store including the fireation of the original showrunner, the addition of new showrunner Josh Safran (Gossip Girl), new characters and a few that were given the pink slip..

First the good news: While the characters have yet to be cast, three new characters are being added to the show and the descriptions of what the network is looking for is quite interesting

Courtney, an African-American chorus member in her mid- to late-20s with a strong voice. She is “incredibly attractive and confident, but also open-minded and non-judgmental.”

Danny, a straight, working-class Brooklynite in his mid-20s. He is “sexy, charismatic and musically gifted, but also self-destructive and remote.” Those auditioning must have the skills to sing in a rock and/or soul style.

Joe, a Brooklyn-born guy in his early to mid-20s. He is “gay, very cute, incredibly open and optimistic.”

And now for the bad (or should we fans of the show say good news?) The producers have heard our prayers and now I bring word that Jaime Cepero, who played Anjelica Houston's annoying assistant Ellis will not be returning next season. While I'm sure Jaime is a nice guy in real life every time his character showed up I wanted to dive through my TV screen and beat the living shit out of him. Second to go is Raza Jaffrey, who plays Katharine McPhee's boyfriend Dev. Rounding out the rest of the actors who won't be returning are Debra Messing's husband Frank (Brian d'Arcy James), and her mister-ess, lead actor Michael (Will Chase). I don't think there was really room for Dev on the show, especially since Katharine McPhee's character was starting to come out of her shell and find herself in the season finale. So next season we need more blood, more backstabbing and more drama from the characters and not have anyone tied down in committed relationships. I do hope they bring Ellis back just because I would like to see him go up against Anjelica Houston once more, especially after he didn't take getting fired lightly.
