Writer/director Tyler Perry, who is promoting his latest coonstrvaganza Madea's Big Happy Family had some harsh words for director Spike Lee who has been very vocal about his dislike for Perry's film and TV projects - calling his TBS shows Meet the Browns and House of Payne "coonery" and "buffoonery."
At a press conference on Tuesday in Beverly Hills, Perry fought back at Lee's harsh but true comments. "I'm so sick of hearing about damn Spike Lee," Perry said, as reported by Box Office Magazine. "Spike can go straight to hell! You can print that. I am sick of him talking about me, I am sick of him saying, ‘This is a coon; this is a buffoon.' I am sick of him talking about black people going to see movies. This is what he said: ‘You vote by what you see,' as if black people don't know what they want to see.
"I am sick of him -- he talked about Whoopi, he talked about Oprah, he talked about me, he talked about Clint Eastwood. Spike needs to shut the hell up!"
I don't think it's the idea of blacks not knowing what they want to see. i think his argument is there should be variety in black films outside of the ridiculous stereotypes portrayed in your films. Alot of Perry's films come across as man-bashing, something I see he still hasn't gotten over from his childhood. There needs to be a balance in black cinema, and I feel Spike criticizing others is not helping. Spike is a film pioneer - why isn't he making action, sci-fi, horror, or any genre films with strong black characters in them? Don't wait on Tyler Perry to do it. You have some power as a director - make shit happen.
