It's official: Guillermo del Toro will be visiting Middle Earth.
According to Variety, executive producers Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, along with executives at New Line, announced on Thursday afternoon that del Toro had signed on to direct both 'The Hobbit' and its sequel. What lies ahead is a four-year sojourn in New Zealand, where del Toro will film both movies back-to-back with the help of Jackson's Wingnut and WETA production teams.

Del Toro is certainly no stranger to the land of non-humans: His 'Pan's Labyrinth' was lauded for its depiction of an ethereal fantasy world, and his 'Hellboy' movies center around the benevolent spawn of Satan.
The sequel, which is currently untitled, will cover the 60-year-period of time between 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.' Although the studio would not confirm release information, unofficial word is that 'The Hobbit' would be slated to open in 2011, with the sequel scheduled for 2012.
Del Toro's 'Hellboy 2' opens in theaters July 11.
I love all of Del Toro's films so I am definitely looking foward to seeing these films.
